
The AAMS fellowship, known as the Dr. Richard Gates Fellowship, is awarded to select students who have demonstrated an exceptional grasp of surgical skills, particularly in cardiothoracic surgery, as well as a strong understanding of cardiothoracic anatomy and physiology. These students must also exhibit exceptional aptitude for leadership, mentoring, and teaching. Selected Fellows will have the opportunity to work alongside AAMS instructors as Teaching Assistants (TAs), helping to instruct students in the fundamentals of cardiothoracic surgery. To apply for this surgical education fellowship, candidates must demonstrate integrity and academic excellence, be at least 18 years old, and currently enrolled in college. Additionally, Fellows may be expected to support the AAMS educational program by assisting and guiding fellow students.

From July 7 to July 20, 2025, the AAMS fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery will focus on advanced surgical education fellowship opportunities.

Completion of the Basic – Intermediate Cardiothoracic Surgical Skills Summer Internship is an essential step for those pursuing an AAMS fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery. This program serves as a crucial part of the surgical education fellowship, enhancing participants' hands-on skills and knowledge in the field.
